As with their 1978 series, the 1979 Topps baseball cards have a more straightforward design. They chose to focus on the posed or action shot photograph of the player with a simple border. They even eliminated the script typeface this year, opting for plain text for the player's name, team name and position. As in 1978, the Topps logo is inside a small baseball image at the bottom. The player's stats and information is on the back. Where there is space, a biography is included. There is also a baseball trivia game called "Baseball Dates."

This 1979 Topps baseball card set has 726 cards, with Ozzie Smith being the top rookie card. Other rookies in this set are Bob Horner, Pedro Guerrero, Bob Welch, Willie Wilson and Carney Lansford. Another card that's popular among collectors (and challenging to find) is of catcher Marc Hill. All-Time Record Holders and League Leaders are two of the subsets, and "Prospects" is also included. The set boasts more than 20 Hall of Fame players.
