Featuring a large player photo as on cards from previous years, the 1981 Topps' baseball card set is distinctive due to the baseball cap added to the bottom corner. On the cap is the team name and player's position. The set consists of 726 cards and includes standard subsets such as the league leaders, record breakers and team cards that include checklists on the reverse side. Rookie cards of special interest are Kirk Gibson (316), Harold Baines (347) and Fernando Valenzuela (302).

As with many of the cards around this time, there are problems with the printing referred to as "centering issues" and also poorly cut edges, making it difficult to find pristine copies. Additional Topps issues include their Traded baseball card set of 132 cards, with the numbers continuing on after the regular set (727-858) and Scratch-Offs, which were part of a game where you put together your team and then scratch off circles to reveal individual plays. Topps also issued a set of baseball card stickers. From Fleer, there was a basic set of 660 cards (their first since 1963), All Star Game/Team Logo Stickers and Fleer Star stickers. Donruss was the other key competitor for Topps. They issued their first Donruss baseball card set in 1981, which featured 605 cards.
