This is the first year that Topps released their "Tiffany" baseball card sets. These are limited editions of both the regular and traded card sets. Manufactured in Ireland, they were the same as the regular cards except that they were printed with white cardboard instead of the standard gray cardboard that was used at the time. They also had a glossy finish, giving them a fancier appearance. They came in special boxes with a different color each year.

In 1984, the inner box was red, and there were 10,000 sets made. They were offered from 1984 to 1991. Topps' standard baseball card set had 792 cards this year, with subsets for season highlights, league leaders, all-stars and major league career leaders. Don Mattingly (8) is the key rookie card for the year. The 1984 Donruss baseball card set is often considered the best set of the 1980s, due to its high-quality photography and classic design. It also boasts New York Yankees player Don Mattingly's rookie card.
