In their yearly population report, PSA Authentication Services lists over 130 different baseball card issues from 1986. It was an exciting year for collecting, and chief among the sets were Topps, Donruss and Fleer. The 1986 Topps baseball card set is comprised of 792 cards. Included in the subsets are a tribute to Pete Rose, All-Stars and record breakers. Manager cards with team checklists and team leaders are sprinkled throughout the set. Darren Daulton and Cecil Fielder are the top rookie cards.

This year, the Topps Tiffany set with glossy finish white cards was released in a maroon box. There were 5,000 sets made. The 1986 Donruss baseball card set had 660 cards, and the key cards are Paul O'Neill, Roger Clemens and Nolan Ryan. Key rookie cards are Fred McGriff and Jose Canseco. From Fleer, there was also a 660-card set, organized by the team's finishing place in 1985 and with the players listed alphabetically by their last name.
