The major baseball card sets from 1987 were issued by Topps, Donruss and Fleer, but there were also more obscure and limited sets from such diverse companies as Burger King, Cain's Potato Chips, Coca-Cola, Kraft, Mother's Cookies and Allstate Insurance. The 1987 Topps baseball card set of 792 cards had subsets that included Turn Back the Clock, Record Breakers and All-Stars. There were also team checklists with pictures of the various managers. Key rookies this year were Barry Larkin and Rafael Palmiero.

Their deluxe Tiffany sets this year were issued in the largest number yet, with 30,000 sets made, in violet inner boxes. The 660-card Donruss set had black and gold borders this year, with their popular Diamond King subset. Rookie cards include Bobby Bonilla, Barry Bonds, Kevin Brown, Greg Maddux David Cone, Will Clark, Wally Joyner, Bo Jackson, Barry Larkin, Chuck Finley and Rafael Palmeiro. As with their sets from other years, all packages included 3 pieces of a puzzle (this year's was of Roberto Clemente). Each factory set had the fully completed puzzle. The 1987 Fleer set was issued with 660 cards and subsets that included Rookie Pairs, specials and checklists.
