Ex.SS New York. 1839 Dahlonega mint gold half eagle. Ex. S.S. New York! The 1839 Dahlonega Mint Half Eagle is a prized coin in it's own right, let alone from a storied shipwreck. It is notable for its one-year type status as it transitioned from William Kneass’ Classic Head to Christian Gobrecht’s Liberty Head design, used only on 1838 eagles, 1839 quarter eagles, and this half eagle. Struck at the Dahlonega Mint with a mintage of 13,674, it bears a “D” mintmark above the date, unique to 1839. Its Neoclassical Liberty and Heraldic Eagle reflect 1839’s artistic style. Some examples, such as this coin, originate from the S.S. New York shipwreck, adding provenance value. Its historical link to the Georgia Gold Rush and first-year Liberty Head design make it a favorite for type and Dahlonega collectors.
