This well-struck, somewhat prooflike example of a Bechtler issue is a standout, graded at the highest level by PCGS, tied with only two other coins, one being a CAC example last seen 84 months ago. Light adjustment marks are visible at "CARATS" on the obverse and "? C." on the reverse, factored into its lofty grade by PCGS, with a population of just three and none finer. A critical piece for specialists, this coin is challenging to replicate at any price. Its historical significance is tied to the August 1, 1834, day date, reflecting Bechtler’s response to the Coinage Act of June 28, 1834, which altered gold coin composition and weight to encourage circulation. Prior to this, gold coins had vanished from domestic use since 1820 due to bullion values exceeding face values, forcing Bechtler and other coins to trade at a premium based on gold content. The Bechtler coinage, including this piece, adapted to federal changes while maintaining a 20-carat standard, as seen in the $471,332 worth of gold assayed between January and August 1836. New designs emerged, including a dollar, quarter eagle, and additional half eagles from A. Bechtler and C. Bechtler Jr., marking a fifth series of coinage. Augustus Bechtler’s half eagle may reflect Christopher Bechtler’s shift toward other ventures. Despite being a private mint, the Bechtler operation faced no government interference, and their coins circulated effectively alongside federal gold in Georgia and the Carolinas until just before the Civil War. The August 1 date, considered for federal coins to distinguish new from old, was uniquely adopted by Bechtler, adding to this coin’s historical intrigue.
