The 1854-DERI California Fractional Gold Liberty Head Octagonal $1 coin (BG-527) emerged during the California Gold Rush, a period of economic chaos following the 1848 discovery of gold. With federal coinage scarce, private minters in San Francisco filled the void by producing fractional gold pieces for everyday transactions. This octagonal dollar, weighing about 1.672 grams of .900 fine gold, was struck as legal tender equivalent to U.S. currency, reflecting the era's ingenuity and frontier spirit. You will save a bundle when you purchase this AU Details graded example. PCGS has graded only 2 original specimens and reports that there are only 7 to 8 known of this rare variety. Featuring a coroneted Liberty Head obverse derived from federal designs, encircled by 10 stars, the reverse proclaims "1 DOLLAR 1854" within a beaded ring, surrounded by "CALIFORNIA GOLD" and the "DERI" signature of engraver M. Deriberpie. As a Rarity-7 variety, BG-527 is exceptionally scarce, with few survivors from the original mintage. The DERI mark ties it to Deriberpie's brief 1853-1854 collaboration with local jewelers like Nouzillet & Routhier.
