The 1854-FD California Fractional Gold Liberty Head Octagonal $1 coin, cataloged as BG-504, represents a fascinating chapter in American numismatic history. Minted during the height of the California Gold Rush, these private issues filled a critical void in small-denomination currency when federal coins were scarce. Struck by Frontier & Deviercy of San Francisco, the octagonal design maximized gold usage and echoed the territory's innovative spirit. This is a popular Frontier, Deviercy & Co. variety with a reverse that depicts the eagle, shield, and ribbon motif from the Assay Office slugs.The coin's obverse features a coroneted Liberty Head, inspired by contemporary U.S. federal designs, encircled by 10 stars symbolizing California's place in the Union.
