Undated (struck between 1837-1842) C. Bechtler. $5 Gold. K-20. Rarity-4. 134 Grains. Star.An extremely attractive Mint State specimen and a simply amazing survivor of one of the premier private gold coiners of the 19th century. Superb coloration with semi-prooflike surfaces. This distinctive obverse specifies CAROLINA GOLD, with filled A’s lacking their crosslets, the weight 134.G. inscribed over a 5-pointed star, and 21 CARATS below. The reverse identifies the maker and locale as C: BECHTLER AT RUTHERF:. Wonderfully smooth-looking surfaces show only the most trivial of abrasions for the grade-and little to distract the student's eye on either side. The devices and legends are not quite fully raised, as there is a hint of strike weakness at 2 o'clock on the reverse by the second "A" in "CAROLINA" but the primary designs remain in bold definition. Therefore, we feel strongly that our offering of this piece will act as a superlative representative of the type for the discerning collector, and one that would be difficult to match for sheer quality and beauty.
