CAC. In 1879, coin dealer J.W. Scott acquired the original Confederate half dollar reverse die from Ebenezer Locke Mason, Jr., tracing back to New Orleans Mint official Dr. B.F. Taylor. Lacking an obverse counterpart for the 1861 originals—four proofs struck amid secession—Scott innovated. To protect the fragile, rusted die from premature failure during planned silver overstriking, he commissioned a new obverse die inscribed with the coin's history: "4 ORIGINALS STRUCK BY ORDER OF C.S.A. IN NEW ORLEANS 1861" alongside "REV. SAME AS U.S. (FROM ORIGINAL DIE, SCOTT)." PCGS has graded 19 of the Scott tokens as MS64 with 5 finer. In CAC, there are 7 in MS64 with 2 finer.Paired with the authentic Confederate shield and wreath reverse, this produced 500 white-metal tokens, softer than silver to minimize die wear. Struck as insurance, these lightweight pieces—about the size of a half dollar—served as affordable mementos, sold at 50 cents each while Scott fulfilled orders for the scarcer silver restrikes. These tokens, often graded MS-65 or better, gleam with proof-like fields and sharp details, their pewter patina evoking the era's grit.
