1793 1C CHAIN PERIOD P01 PCGS CAC - CAC Pop 1 Out of 16 CAC in All Grades! The 1793 Chain Cent, Periods variety (S-4), stands as one of the most historic issues in American numismatics, with a recorded mintage of just 36,103 pieces and an estimated 300 survivors today. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in March 1793, it represents the very first circulating federal coinage, preceding even the 1793 half cents and subsequent large cent designs. The S-4 variety is instantly distinguished by its punctuation, featuring periods following both the date and LIBERTY—an attribute not found on any other 1793 cent. Scholars including Walter Breen and Harry Salyards have suggested differing theories about the engraver responsible, with stylistic comparisons pointing to Joseph Wright or another hand later involved in the Wreath Cent dies, leaving its authorship an enduring mystery. Though the S-3(America) can be found with ease, the Period (S-4) is near impossible to find. This is likely the only example that you can acquire a Chain CAC Period Cent for 4 figures. The most relevant auction comps is a FR02 PCGS non-CAC that sold for $5,040 02/2023 HA.
