Ex.SS New York. Here’s an interesting coin with a lot of history behind it to add to your collection. The 1844-O Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar was struck at the New Orleans Mint during the mid-19th century. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, it features Liberty seated on the obverse holding a shield and cap on a pole, with stars and the date below. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield, olive branch, and arrows, surrounded by "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "QUAR. DOL."This particular example comes from the wreck of the SS New York, a sidewheel steamship that sank in a hurricane off the Gulf Coast on September 7, 1846, while traveling from Galveston to New Orleans. The vessel carried passengers, crew, and a cargo that included various gold and silver coins in circulation at the time.Recovered decades later and conserved, the coin has been certified by NGC with the "Shipwreck Effect" designation, reflecting environmental damage from prolonged saltwater exposure, such as etching or corrosion, which distinguishes it from land-preserved specimens.
