Ex.S.B. Pulaski. This extraordinary 1836 Classic Head Plain 4 $5 Half Eagle (William Kneass’s bold, disheveled-haired Liberty design) is a rare survivor of the tragic Steamship Pulaski disaster. On June 14, 1838, a boiler explosion sank the luxury vessel off North Carolina, claiming 128 lives in one of America’s deadliest maritime tragedies. Introduced under the Mint Act of 1834 to encourage circulation by reducing gold weight and preventing melting, this type escaped widespread attrition. Of the original mintage across the 1834–1838 series, only 1,213 examples have been certified by PCGS in all grades combined. Just 20 have survived at the MS64 level, with merely 4 finer. This razor-sharp, lustrous gem exhibits booming cartwheel effect and fresh mint bloom—exceptional for a coin that lay on the ocean floor until recovery efforts post-2018 (when the wreck yielded early U.S. gold, including Classic Head half and quarter eagles). A premier registry piece blending numismatic rarity, superb condition, and dramatic shipwreck provenance, it offers instant prestige for the discerning collector.
