The 1837 Feuchtwanger One Cent, cataloged as HT-268(3E), is a notable product of the Hard Times era that followed the Panic of 1837. Struck privately to alleviate a shortage of small change, these tokens circulated in everyday transactions. Dr. Lewis Feuchtwanger’s issues are especially distinctive for their experimental approach to both design and metallic composition during a period of economic strain.Unlike traditional copper cents, this token was produced in what was known as “German silver,” or argentan—a white metal alloy developed as a less expensive alternative to copper. The alloy, composed primarily of nickel, copper, zinc, tin, and trace metals, gave the pieces a lighter appearance and greater hardness. Feuchtwanger promoted this composition as durable and well suited for circulation, anticipating later federal interest in nickel-based coinage. This example, certified NGC XF-45, displays even wear that reflects its use in commerce, with the major design elements remaining clear and legible. NGC has graded 10 examples at the XF-45 level, with 119 finer, placing this piece among a relatively limited group at this specific grade and underscoring its standing as a well-preserved survivor of an innovative private coinage.
