1792 Washington President Copper, Eagle and Stars Reverse, Lettered Edge. No more than seven examples of this rare pattern coinage issue are believed to exist -- Breen's Encyclopedia (1988) gave the total as "4-6 known." The 1792 Eagle & Stars Washington cent is one of the earliest and most evocative American copper issues, produced at a moment when the young nation was still defining its identity. Struck privately rather than at the U.S. Mint, this cent reflects the experimental nature of early American coinage and the public’s desire to see George Washington honored on a circulating coin. The obverse features a right-facing bust of Washington surrounded by stars, while the reverse displays an eagle within a wreath—motifs that would soon become standard symbols of the United States. Certified by NGC as XF Details with burnished surfaces, this example shows strong remaining detail consistent with circulation in the late 18th century. As a Washington “pattern-era” copper, it occupies a special place in early American numismatics, valued for its historical context as much as for its rarity and visual appeal.
