CAC. K-10. Struck between 1837 and 1842.  Struck in the gold fields of North Carolina, this 1837 Bechtler quarter eagle represents the output of one of America’s most important private minters. Christopher Bechtler and his family transformed locally mined gold into coinage that circulated widely throughout the Southeast, filling a critical need before federal branch mints were established in the region. This example, bearing the 67.G. 21 carat standard and the RUTHERF inscription, reflects the Bechtlers’ evolving approach to fineness and weight. These pieces often saw heavy use, making higher-grade survivors especially elusive. The present coin’s Mint State preservation sets it apart from the typically encountered circulated examples.Certified MS-61 by PCGS and approved by CAC, it is among a very small population at this level, with only a handful graded finer. Its combination of historical importance, regional character, and relative scarcity in Mint State makes it a compelling representative of early American gold coinage outside the federal system.
