Ex. S.S. New York shipwreck. Struck in the midst of the short-lived Classic Head quarter eagle gold series (1834-1839), the 1836 $2.50 quarter eagle represents a transitional era in American coinage. This example features the desirable Script 8 variety in the date, a subtle but notable characteristic that specialists appreciate within the short-lived type.Graded AU-58 by NGC, the coin displays the strong detail and attractive surfaces typical of pieces that have seen only the lightest circulation. NGC has certified 105 examples in this grade, with just 103 finer, underscoring its relative scarcity at the upper end of the condition census. Much of the original design detail remains intact, from Liberty’s hair curls to the eagle’s feathers on the reverse.Adding another layer of historical interest, this coin is an artifact of maritime tragedy. It was recovered from the wreck of the steamship SS New York, lost on September 7, 1846. Carried as part of the vessel’s cargo, the coin survived nearly a century and a half beneath the sea before being brought back into the numismatic world.
