The 1907 $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle in High Relief, Flat Edge format represents a dramatic reimagining of American coinage at the dawn of the twentieth century. Sculpted by Augustus Saint-Gaudens at the urging of Theodore Roosevelt, the design broke sharply from decades of conservative minting, introducing bold depth, sculptural modeling, and a sense of motion rarely seen on circulating coinage.Because of its striking artistry and its status as a radical departure from earlier double eagle designs, the High Relief issue was widely recognized as something special from the outset. Many examples were set aside and carefully preserved, resulting in a notable number of surviving pieces, including a meaningful population in choice and gem uncirculated grades. PCGS has certified 61 at MS-66, with just 24 finer.Though not rare in an absolute sense, the High Relief double eagle enjoys enduring demand rooted in its historical importance, limited production, and extraordinary visual appeal. Its reputation as one of the most admired designs in American numismatics continues to sustain strong collector interest across generations.
