Anhwei. Kuang-hsü Dollar Year 24 (1898) MS66 NGC, Anking mint, KM-Y45.2, L&M-204, Kann-53a. Small obverse rosettes. A stunning rendition and among the finest dragon Dollars this cataloger has yet handled, from a notoriously difficult province to collect nonetheless. While examples can be located with some patience up through Choice certifications, those any finer elude even the most advanced collectors. The mint in Anking closed after little more than one year active, with the new mint opening about three years after that closing, to produce only copper coins; any emission of Anhwei is thus fiercely contested, especially at Gem and higher quality. Every element of the current offering is set to impress, and while the scales are characteristically soft, this does little to detract from the superior visual quality tempered by a silty cabinet tone and vibrant flow lines. A conditional and aesthetic outlier, further elevated by the impressive Turpin Hsi and Nelson Chang pedigrees, and certainly headed for a truly advanced cabinet. Ex.
