Andaman Islands. Penal Colony Rupee Token 1866 XF Details (Corrosion) NGC, Calcutta mint, KM-Tn2, Remick-T2. Center Hole type. Estimated mintage of 21,000. In The Guidebook and Catalogue of British Commonwealth Coins by Remick et al., the authors estimate that less than 20 examples of each type can be found in private collections, of the 17,788 pieces that were not returned to the British Indian government upon recall in 1870. Five examples across both issuing years (1861 and 1866) and bust types, can be found through archival research, leading us to believe this offering is quite rare indeed, as only one of those prior auction listings matches both the year and bust of the example at had. Though a total of four are present on the NGC Census, this is only the second of its kind to hit the auction block in recent memory, the first appearing in London Coins Auction 190, realizing $33,802 (lot 1141). The Ross Island Penal Colony was established in 1858, in response to the Indian Rebellion of the year prior. Conditions were poor for the thousands that found themselves on the island, leading to a high death rate for the inmate population, comprised primarily of activists, insurgents, and other political prisoners. The prison complex on the island, Kala Pani (also known as 'Black Water' or Cellular Jail) held numerous supporters of independence, before the colony was finally decommissioned in 1945 following occupation by Allied forces.
