Hawaii Republic Of Hawaii, Department of Finance 5 Dollars 1895 (ND 1899) Pick 6as Specimen PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ. Hawaiian banknotes and Specimen are exceptionally rare and represent the pinnacle of World Paper Money Collecting. Issuance of paper money from 1880 to 1905 was not extensive, as the denominations of the paper money were quite high. This Department of Finance $5 was redeemable for gold coinage of the United States, hence it was quite a sum of money, and this was the smallest denomination of the series. As such, only 5,000 notes were printed and issued between 1899 and 1905. All 5,000 notes were redeemed, and only one is known without any form of cancellation marks. This Specimen is equally rare at present. At the time of writing, PMG has graded only one issued banknote and one Specimen, which is offered here. The paper quality is exemplary, and the colors are as bright and fresh as the day this gigantic Specimen was printed. Notice the original selvage seen next to the left margin which remains intact. Hole punched and overprint cancelled. This $5 in Gold is accompanied by a silver-backed $5 Specimen, also seen in this auction. HID08101242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
