Hawaii Republic Of Hawaii, Department of Finance 5 Dollars 1895 (ND 1897) Pick 11as Specimen PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ. The Department of Finance issued a series of Silver Certificate notes, backed by either Hawaiian or United States coinage minted in 90% silver. This $5 was the initial denomination of the series. This note is most likely the most "common" Hawaiian banknote in issued format, as a whopping 10,000 were printed with 15 extant as of 1916. Of course, the term "common" is said with irony, as that is a tiny print total and circulated lasted all but eight years, from 1897 to 1905. Of the 15 notes not redeemed by 1916, 12 of these are actually known and accounted for, with an additional two cancelled examples known to exist. However, this Specimen is another matter. At the time of writing, this is the first and only example graded in the PMG Population Report, and it is the first we have offered. It is a fully Gem-grade example, with remarkable eye appeal despite its massive size and age. The extra wide margin at left includes a counterfoil. Hole punched and overprint cancelled. This beautiful Specimen is a complement to the $5 Gold note also offered in this auction. A true rarity. HID08101242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
