China Board of Revenue 5 Taels 1855 (Yr. 5) Pick A11c S/M#H176-22 PMG Very Fine 25. Board of Revenue banknotes were circulated by a number of private banks appointed by the government. This example retains strong ink despite being nearly two centuries old. An overlooked detail on early imperial Chinese currency is the number of claws on the dragons; while most dragons on Chinese banknotes are depicted with four, the five-clawed dragon is a symbol of imperial authority. While examples of this variety have appeared on the market before, it is unusual to find it in a high grade. At the time of cataloging, there are only six examples in higher grades recorded in the PMG Population Report. The holder mentions spindle holes at issue.
