AU (12: 4;4;4). FS-402 (FS-003). The obverse die is clashed with a 50¢ Seated Liberty obverse die. How cool is that! Dave Bowers called these "The most interesting; Most spectacular in all of the American coinage series!" The evolution of theories on how these were produced follows genuine scientific reasoning. First off; these were thought to be remnants of a clandestine mintage of mismatched designs. This is rather difficult to imagine someone using a screw press to make special die combinations. A regular press cannot accommodate mismatched die as the collar would not match one or both of the dies. A screw press would have to be used. The coins made by this die combination do not exist. Another theory that is thrown out is that the mis-matched clashes were done on purpose. For what reason? The real reason is detailed in the Attribution Guide; pages of which are presented in the images section. This example show the clash detail very clearly. It is well struck with very few marks.
