(Riley, KS)- Kaup & Trumbull 25¢ (3); 50¢ (2) ND ca. 1880s-90s Whitfield 1c (3); 1d (2) Very Good or Better. This is a quintet of unusual scrip that skirted Federal law against private currency notes by its obligations. Like the V.F. Ferguson scrip listed in Whitfield, this note is part of the genre that falls into the "Not Intended to be Used as Money" class. The size and design style are identical to those Ferguson notes. Printed two sides on bond paper, in green, with the imprint of J.M. Padgett Coupon Co., Topeka on the face margin. Title and obligation are across the face. Fancy back with a small vignette at the center flanked by the denomination. A couple of the notes have pinholes. Kaup & Trumbull are listed on page 202 of Kansas Paper Money by Steve Whitfield.
