T12 $5 1861 PF-1 Cr. 49 PMG Choice Fine 15. Jules Manouvrier was a small New Orleans lithographer who was pressed into service by the Treasury Department to print $5s and $10s in 1861. While the $5 was unique at the time, having no vignettes but having a back design, Manouvrier's less than professional shipping skills doomed his continued relationship with the government. A poorly packaged shipment was pilfered on its way to Richmond and as a result the companion $10 to this design was withdrawn from circulation. To this day, we do no know what it looked like. This example has seen time in circulation, but is repair and cancellation free. The blue back retains much of its original hue and margins are quite good.
