ACHAEMENID PERSIA. Time of Artaxerxes III-Darius III (ca. 350-333 BC). AR tetradrachm (23mm, 15.35 gm, 7h). NGC Choice VF 3/5 - 3/5, flan flaw. Uncertain mint in Caria, ca. 350-341 BC. Persian king or hero, wearing cidaris and candys, quiver over shoulder, in kneeling-running stance right, drapery in long curve from left knee to right ankle, right knee obscured by drapery, drawing bow / Warrior, wearing cyrbasia, on horse galloping right, spearing with right hand. Meadows, Royal Achaemenid Issues, Pixodarus Hoard in: Coin Hoards IX (2002), pg. 210. SNG Copenhagen 290. Much of our knowledge about this rather enigmatic Persian royal coinage series comes from the Pixodaros Hoard, which accounts for over half of the known specimens. It was previously believed that this coinage might have been an emergency issue struck in the twilight years of the Persian Empire, but it is now thought that the coinage was at least somewhat regular, owing to the wide variety of dies found among the examples of the hoard.
