1794 1C Head of 1794, Ornate Head, S-28, B-10, R.2, MS64 Brown PCGS. CAC. Breen Die State VI, or possibly later, with multiple obverse die cracks. Heck Die State VII. While the obverse of this die pair is called "The Ornate," the reverse that is shared with S-27 is distinctive for its single leaf covering the branch stem below the I in AMERICA. This is the only reverse die appearing on any 1794 cents showing that characteristic. Both sides of this Choice Mint State cent exhibit bold die details with Liberty’s hair full delineated. A small inclusion below Liberty’s eye identifies the provenance of this important cent that is tied for the finest known S-28. Henry Chapman cataloged this piece for the Earle Collection in 1912 as Uncirculated with the reverse varnished. B. Max Mehl wrote in 1921 that this piece is a magnificent uncirculated specimen, noting that the obverse "is of an even glossy light olive" and the reverse "Is a light orange color turning to olive." Several decades later, Bill Noyes cataloged this example in 1989 as MS60, observing that the reverse was "stripped, retoned steaky light brown and orange, then lacquered." We disagree with the opinion of past catalogers as one glance will show the beauty of both the obverse and reverse. The pedigree in the 1989 EAC catalog was incorrectly recorded as "Wilharm ’21: 1327A, Proskey-Hines, HKD, WHS, REN," the last three referring to Homer K. Downing, Dr. William H. Sheldon, and R.E. Naftzger, Jr. The correct provenance follows: Ex: George H. Earle, Jr. (Henry Chapman, 6/1912), lot 3378; Henry Chapman; Dr. G.F.E. Wilharm (B. Max Mehl, 2/1921), lot 1327A; Robert D. Book (5/1930); George H. Clapp (12/19/1946); American Numismatic Society; Dr. William H. Sheldon (4/19/1972); R.E. Naftzger, Jr. (Cincinnati EAC, 4/1989), lot 24; Jack H. Beymer. We have verified with the American Numismatic Society that title to this coin is unencumbered. HID06601242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
