1795 1C Jefferson Head, Plain Edge, S-80, B-11a, R.5 -- Tooled -- NGC Details. VF. The so-called "Jefferson Head" cents from 1795 were not products of the fledgling Philadelphia Mint, but instead were privately produced by John Harper of that city. Harper, who provided the facility where the 1792 half disme was produced, created his own dies as an imitation of the cents then circulating. These pieces were provided as samples of the work he could perform for the United States, and were later simply spent by their recipients. The issue received the "Jefferson Head" moniker decades after it was coined, due to Liberty's imagined resemblance to the USA's third president. This plain edge rendering is more often seen than the lettered edge variety, with perhaps less than 60 examples extant. Hints of olive-gold accent Chestnut-brown patina along the borders and in the recesses. Some pitting is seen on the obverse and the reverse fields exhibit rough areas from corrosion. Attempts to address surface imperfections on the obverse are seen under a loupe and account for the Tooled designation by NGC. An unaided view reveals well-defined and grade-consistent motifs and legends, with the date and the fraction showing slightly heavier wear. Ex: Guttag Brothers; T.
