1799 1C S-189, B-3, R.2 -- Corroded -- NCS. XF Details. Die State IV. The two rim cracks above the legends are visible, though further die state determination is indeterminable given the level of corrosion. The mintage of the issue was an astonishing 904,565 pieces, though most of that mintage was performed with 1798-dated dies. The strike on this piece is excellent, albeit somewhat obscured by the noted corrosion which is readily apparent in the fields and is centric around the rims. The piece displays light and deeper chocolate brown coloring with brighter red hues along Liberty's portrait. While there are no major abrasions, a notable gouge cuts through the NI in UNITED, which serves as a pedigree marker. Even given its details grading, it will be difficult to find a finer non-problematic coin. Ex: Public Auction Sale (Stack's, 11/2004), lot 20. From The Bellaire Collection.
