1801 1C S-216, B-6, R.1, MS64 Red PCGS. In his condition census that was published in 2000, Del Bland recorded this example as the second finest known, trailing only a second piece from the Essex Institute, and tied with an example in the ANS Collection. In 1981, the Bowers and Ruddy cataloger wrote: "Evidence of light cabinet friction on higher parts of obverse, but to call this AU would be a gross injustice and a severe understatement." Many years later, in his photographic database, Bill Noyes entered this piece with a grade of AU50 and tied for CC-9. In our opinion, the true census rank for this example is near the top of those known today and it might be the finest known S-216 cent. Slight mellowing is noted on the brilliant mint red surfaces of this Choice Mint State piece that shows weakness at the upper obverse as usual for the variety. This is the sole 1801 large cent of any variety that PCGS has designated as Red and there are a mere five additional coins that are designated as Red and Brown (6/26). Housed in a generation 1.2 "rattler" holder. Ex: Found in an old desk at the Essex Institute in the 1930s; "Property of a Massachusetts Collector" / Thomas L. Elder (1/1937), lot 2564; Arthur A. Wells; Bowers and Ruddy (8/1981), lot 2739; Anthony J. Terranova; Donald Brigandi (Brigandi Coin Co.). HID06601242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
