1803 1C Small Date, Small Fraction, S-253, B-12, R.2, MS64 Brown NGC. Breen Die State IV or later. Both sides have die cracks and faint clash marks. The reverse die is failing at the first S in STATES and the arching crack at STATE is heavy. Mintage for the 1803 Draped Bust cent was widely reported as 2,471,353 pieces through 1978. This total, however, was derived from a reconstruction of Mint records available from the production era, which are not comprehensive. The 1979 edition of the Guide Book updated the 1803 mintage to 3,131,691 coins, removing some assumptions made during the initial assessment. The reported mintages for many issues of that time are best-estimates, as the Mint was not prepared to document exact production and delivery details, especially as mintages grew into the millions.      The 1803 has 24 varieties based upon die pairings that are categorized using the size of the date and the fraction. This MS64 Brown Sheldon-253 is a Small Date and Small Fraction variety. Satiny luster throughout the deep, chestnut-brown patina shows faded wisps of original copper-mint red and pale-gold in the protected spaces. The strike is strong and slightly off-center to the east. A couple of tiny nicks on Liberty's neck and a few minor carbon spots exist, with a spot on the I in UNITED that serves as a pedigree marker. Overall eye appeal is excellent. NGC reports only eight numerically finer pieces for the date, all 1803 varieties considered (5/26). HID06601242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
