1804 1C S-266b, B-1, R.2, XF45 NGC. The Sheldon-266 is the sole 1804 cent variety from the 1804 Draped Bust cent, notwithstanding the out-of-mint restrike that followed. S-266b is the middle die state, showing a cud above RTY in LIBERTY, but no cud over MERIC. The 4 in the date is triple punched and the die alignment places the 0 in the date directly opposite of the O in OF. This issue is one of the keys to the Draped Bust large cent series. Almost 90% of the numerically graded pieces at NGC and PCGS are at VF and under, with only three Mint State examples reported between those two services as of 6/26. The mahogany-brown devices on this XF45 example are outlined in deep aquamarine-gray, with satiny finish and faint undertones of original-mint color. Aside from a diagonal mark on Liberty's forehead, marks are light and none are overly significant. Wear is grade-consistent and all devices are nicely detailed. Most 1804 examples we have seen are restrikes and original pieces such as this Choice XF cent appear infrequently. NGC Census: 5 in 45, 6 finer (6/26).
