1823/2 1C N-1, R.2, AU53 PCGS. CAC. Die State C/A. This late die state example has dentils fused below the date and others fused from stars 1 to 3. The rest of the obverse border and the reverse border remain crisp. The key date of the Newcomb series, the 1823 is known in two original varieties, the overdate and the normal date. Examples of either variety are difficult to locate in any grade, and those in grades better than VF are quite rare. Light wear is evident on the high points with trivial surface marks on each side, including a few small neck nicks. The piece reveals deep mahogany luster with scattering lighter caramel colors. Ex: W.E. Webster; Jim Mitchell (11/1984); Robert E. Matthews (Superior, 5/1989), lot 623; Jon Alan Boka (Heritage, 9/2011), lot 3039; FUN Signature (Heritage 1/2014), lot 3364.
