1826/5 1C N-8, R.2, MS63+ Brown PCGS. The 1826/5 overdate cent, cataloged as Newcomb-8, is quickly identified as the only 1826 variety where star 6 points to the left of the coronet point. Bill Noyes graded this cent MS60 in the 1989 catalog for Early American Coppers. Today, he considers this important piece as one of the dozen finest survivors from the N-8 die pair. Both sides have rich dark chocolate-brown surfaces with splashes of steel-blue patina on the design high points. Full cartwheel luster is displayed on both sides with traces of original orange mint color surviving, primarily on the reverse. A dark toning spot adjacent to the first S in STATES identifies the provenance of this piece that was discovered in England in the 1970s. PCGS Population: 7 in 63 (2 in 63+), 7 finer (4/26). Ex: Jon Hanson (4/1977); R.E. Naftzger, Jr.; Cincinnati EAC (William C. Noyes, 4/1989), lot 278; Manuel Ahumada (Goldberg Auctions, 6/1917), lot 80; FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2018), lot 3264; FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2020), lot 3136.
