1879 5C AU58 PCGS. While early Shield nickel mintages stretched into the millions, coinage of the type in 1879 dropped to just 25,900 coins, and this issue is appropriately scarce in Mint State. The following year, 1880, would see Shield nickel coinage decline further to just 16,000 pieces. The current 1879 example is near-Mint, with satiny and slightly textured surfaces that complement a bold strike. Only a trace of high-point wear is apparent over the ivory surfaces. There are some faint metal artifacts within the loops of the 9 in the date. HID06601242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
