1883/2 5C Shield, FS-302, XF40 PCGS. Formerly FS-013.1. The Mint struck over 1.45 million 1883 Shield nickels with multiple overdates. The variety features a secondary 2 under the primary 3, most prominently revealed under the lower left curve of the 3. Secondary digits are also visible under both of the 8s. Moderate and grade-consistent wear is noted on the silver-gray devices, though remnants of satiny luster remain in the protected areas. The surfaces show some original dirt within the legends, and marks are limited with none significant. A soft cloud of deep-gray toning northwest of the large 5 serves as a pedigree marker.
