1867 5C Rays, JD-2, Low R.6, PR64 PCGS. CAC. The most recent and authoritative research on 1867 With Rays Shield nickel proofs has been painstakingly compiled by Bernus Turner over 30 years. His studies are presented in John Dannreuther's United States Proof Coins, Volume II: Nickel, where Dannreuther applies them to a thorough understanding of these often enigmatic coins. While the Guide Book historically lists an estimated mintage of 25 coins for this proof issue, Dannreuther's estimate, based off surviving coins, is 60 pieces struck. This number includes three restrike varieties that employ the shared With Rays original reverse. However, the number of original (JD-1) coins known (23 to 25) is conveniently in agreement with the Guide Book estimate. In total, Dannreuther suggests 52 to 55 With Rays proofs are known today, divided between four die varieties. The most plentiful variety (which is still an ultra rarity) is the JD-1 originals, while JD-2 restrikes number 13 to 15 survivors, JD-3 number six to 10, and JD-4 are somewhat confidently 10 known. The coin offered here is the JD-2 restrike, as determined by its obverse date position and the die state of the Rays reverse. The coin is perfectly sharp, though perhaps more satiny in the fields than reflective (as normal for the JD-2 coins). Delicate pastel hues adorn each side, and there are no marks of note. Weakness on the right side border dentils is an artifact of the restrike die state. PCGS Population (all varieties): 16 in 64 (1 in 64+), 11 finer (6/26).
