1867 5C Rays, JD-4, High R.7, PR64 PCGS. CAC. JD-4 represents the last restrike coinage of the 1867 With Rays proof Shield nickel. Only 10 examples of this variety are known, revealing crack-failure of the reverse die. Two of the known pieces are currently housed in "business strike" holders instead of proof, though this is a reflection of their advanced die state and satiny appearance rather than an accurate classification of the coins' striking origin. All JD-4 specimens, regardless of the holder designation, are restrike With Rays proofs. The present JD-4 coin is from before the die failure and it therefore displays superior field mirroring and sharpness compared to the late-state pieces. On the reverse, there is also a small planchet lamination between the F in OF and the first A in AMERICA, which serves as a pedigree marker. Light champagne toning graces each side, and eye appeal is outstanding for the grade, justifying CAC approval. In United States Proof Coins, Volume II: Nickel, John Dannreuther writes: {blockquote}"... seven different examples of JD-4 have been identified before the common reverse die cracks, as noted above. The obverse also cracks, so no more 1867 With Rays Proofs were possible. Although the three known after the dies cracked were struck and intended as Proofs, the quality is diminished from full mirrored Proofs." {/blockquote} PCGS Population (all varieties included): 16 in 64 (1 in 64+), 11 finer (6/26).
