1867 5C No Rays, Pattern Reverse, FS-1902, JD-1, R.6, PR64 Cameo PCGS. CAC. JD-1 and JD-2 share the same obverse die. JD-1 employs the pattern reverse, which is shared by the Judd-507 pattern, while JD-2 is the normal reverse. Information from Bernus Turner suggests either 20 or 25 of the JD-1 pattern reverse were struck, while in United States Proof Coins, Volume II: Nickel, John Dannreuther estimates a mintage of 25+ examples. Surviving numbers point to the 25 or 25+ mintage figure being correct. Dannreuther provides a survival estimate of 20+ examples for the pattern reverse, while Saul Teichman's photo library records 21 distinct examples. This Choice Cameo boasts delicate lilac iridescence and mirrored fields, with sharply struck and satiny central devices. PCGS Population: 2 in 64 Cameo, 7 finer. CAC: 2 in 64, 2 finer (4/26).
