Aquilia Severa (AD 220-222). AR denarius (19mm, 3.25 gm, 11h). NGC AU 4/5 - 4/5. Rome. IVLIA AQVILIA SEVERA AVG, draped bust of Aquilia Severa right, seen from front, hair brushed in waves and bound in small chignon at base of neck / CONCORDIA, Concordia standing facing, head left, patera in outstretched right hand over lit altar at feet to left, double cornucopia cradled in left arm; star in upper left field. RIC IV.II (Elagabalus) 225. Ex the Tamco Collection (Heritage Auctions, Auction 61444, 23 December 2024), lot 21130. One of the more scandalous choices of the young emperor Elagabalus was to marry Aquilia Severa, a Vestal Virgin. Traditionally, the punishment for breaking the thirty-year vow of celibacy was to be buried alive; that does not appear to be Aquilia Severa's fate. He did divorce her, but he remarried her after the divorce of his third wife, Annia Faustina. Her opinions on being married not once, but twice, to Elagabalus, her thoughts on forsaking her vows of celibacy, and her fate after his death in AD 222 are not known.
