Anne "Vigo" 1/2 Crown 1703 VF35 PCGS, KM518.2, S-3580, ESC-569. TERTIO edge. Produced from silver captured from the Spanish at Vigo Bay. The famed "Vigo" series follows previous precedent of hallmarking to indicate a metal's origin, with dies engraved "Vigo" below Anne's bust to denote use of bullion seized by the English at the Battle of Vigo Bay, a British naval engagement with Spain during the opening years of the War of Spanish Succession. While a major success over the French and Spanish, only a small amount of bullion was captured from the treasure fleet and subsequently provided to mintmaster Isaac Newton, coining a handful of gold and silver issues now instantly recognizable and sought-after.
