Philadelphia, PA- Bank of Pennsylvania Check $600 Aug. 17, 1793 About Uncirculated; Philadelphia, PA- Distilled Spirits Import Form July 20, 1790 Very Fine. This Distilled Spirits Import Form certifies that a Leonard Dorsey of Philadelphia imported 103 gallons of rum. Signed by W. Macpherson as Inspector. There are several pinholes and a few small internal splits near the left edge at center. William Macpherson joined the Revolutionary Army on the Hudson and was given rank of Brevet Major. He served as an aide-de-camp to General LaFayette, with General Washington eventually appointing him to duty in Virginia. In 1789, President Washington appointed Macpherson as Surveyor of the Port of Philadelphia. A couple of years later he was appointed Inspector of the Revenue in Philadelphia. During the Whiskey Rebellion he commanded a militia that came to be known as "MacPherson Blues." William Macpherson was an important member of Philadelphia society and an intriguing historical figure. The Bank of Pennsylvania check had some staining along the top that has resulted in an edge tear. It is signed by a prominent artisan of the time in Philadelphia, tanner Joss Meredith. His tan yard and retail leather good store were located on Second Street in the Northern Liberties section of the city. During the 1790s, he built a substantial estate as both merchant and landlord of different properties that he owned (four properties according to records of the time).
