"Appalachicola", FL- Bank of West Florida $5 Nov. 18, 1832 G30 Benice 3 PMG About Uncirculated 55. The bank was originally authorized in 1829, to be located in Marianna. Two years later a branch in Apalachicola was approved. In 1832 the bank was authorized to move to Apalachicola and keep an agency in Marianna. The bank did not prosper and closed its doors in 1837. A brief attempt was made to revive it in 1838, but this too failed, with the bank's notes quoted at 5¢ on the dollar. The bank's closure became permanent in 1842. This $5 design features Justice (or perhaps Commerce) standing with a shield surmounted by an eagle in front of bales and barrels at center. A vignette of Proserpina standing by a column is at left and a round vignette of two men evaluating livestock is at right. There is a small vignette of a Native American in a canoe at bottom center. The location of the bank was misspelled by Rawdon, Wright Hatch & Co. as "Appalachicola" with two "p"s on all of the bank's initial issues. HID08101242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
