(Loudon, PA)- Loudon Saving Fund Society 12-1/2¢ ND Hoober 207-2 PMG Fine 12. Loudon, now known as Fort Loudon, is located in Franklin County, PA. A post office was established in 1814, with the town's name changed to Fort Loudon in 1883. The Loudon Saving Fund Society traces its origins to February 1837. According to the Pennsylvania Auditor General's 1837 report, the Society had about $2,400 in notes outstanding, including 1,823 12-1/2¢ notes. The Society's ultimate fate is unclear, with newspaper notices suggesting normal operation through at least the mid to late 1850s and that it may have been placed in receivership during the early 1860s. A notice appearing in July 1868, set July 24, 1868 as the final date for creditors to present claims against the institution. The note, which is not datelined, has a commonly seen 1830s layout, with the institution's title enclosed by an engraved panel and two end panels displaying the 12-1/2 denomination. The note has seen time in circulation and has a number of small faults such as small tears, short internal and edge splits, and minor repairs and paper damage. The note, however is completely intact, structurally sound, and faces up well. We are unaware of any other examples of any kind from this rare Pennsylvania issuer.
