La Rioja. Provincial 8 Reales 1840-R AU53 NGC, La Rioja mint, KM10, CJ-58. A key of the Argentinian series, the "Rebel Peso" remains among the most notoriously difficult Crowns to locate in anything considered appreciable, and far superior to the two other examples that we have previously offered, both in lower grades. The engraved details remain rather bold, including on the sunface and the mountain sides. A more premium example than this top-pop specimen at NGC is unlikely to surface in the near future. Often considered one of the keys of the series, the "Rebel Peso's" notoriety stems from its altered legend, changing to "REPUBLICA" from "CONFEDERADA" as ordered by the Unitarios under General Brizuela, then-governor of La Rioja. A relic from a tumultuous era of conflict surrounding General Juan Manuel de Rosas rule, and one of a handful of incredibly popular necessity issues from 19th century Latin America. Ex. Freeman Craig & Co. Auction 11 (May 1984, Lot 16); Randolph Zander Collection; William Higgins Collection (Jess Peters, June 1973) From the Grundy Collection of Latin American and Spanish Coins HID07901242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
