Franz Joseph I gold Specimen "Archduke Karl Memorial" Medal of 40 Ducat Weight 1860-Dated SP63 PCGS, Hauser-2220, Horsky-3578var, cf. Montenuovo-2690 (there, in bronze). 64mm. 138.42gm. By C. Radnitzky. CARL. ERZHERZOG. VON. OESTERREICH Bust, left; signed below truncation // DEM. HELDENMÜTHIGEN. FÜHRER. DER. HEERE. ÖSTERREICHS / DEM. BEHARRLICHEN. KAMPFER. FÜR. DEUTSCHLANDS. EHRE; 22. MAI. 1860 below plinth. Issued upon the inauguration of the Archduke Karl Memorial in front of the Hofburg in Vienna. A behemoth gold planchet, struck to 40 Ducat weight, and certainly intended for a distinguished guest of honor. Despite the size of the medal and the impressive high relief, the devices remain free of any conspicuous erosion or scuffing. The fields were struck in a bold Prooflike finish while the legends incorporate a Matte-like effect. HID07901242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
