British Occupation gold Counterstamped 6 Pesos (22 Guilders) ND (1803-1815) AU50 PCGS, cf. KM19, cf. Fr-1, cf. Prid p. 250, fig.24, cf. Scholten 1367b. 10.97gm. Counterstamped under the authority of J.K. Lauffer on a Brazil 6400 Reis, Rio mint (KM172.2, Bentes-175.29). Four counterstamps on the obverse rim: GI, B, MH, and L. One counterstamp on the reverse: W. To combat coin clipping, Lauffer required the counterstamps to be placed in multiple locations as close to the edge as possible. Both the host coin and the counterstamps exhibit firm strikes, adding to the visual appeal of this impossibly rare specimen, certainly one of the most challenging British occupation types not just from the Americas but the world over. Only a single other example of the type can be traced to a public sale, which was a VF35 specimen handled by Schulman in 2020 (ex. R.J. Ford Collection, R.C. Gordon Collection, Edward Roehrs Collection) that hammered for more than $83,000, making this an important opportunity for the collector of counterstamped, regulated gold.
