Alfonso VI gold Counterstamped 4400 Reis ND (1668) AU58 PCGS, Fr-10, LMB-15, Gomes-35.04. Crowned 4 (1662) and 4400 (1668) Counterstamps (UNC Details) on Joao IV 4 Cruzados (Fr-58). 11.16gm. An outstanding specimen for which there may be no peer in terms of quality, surpassing even the NGC AU50 example we offered earlier this year (Heritage Auction 3132, April 2026, Lot 30004). The first Brazilian mint would not open for another 30 years, so these Counterstamps were Portugal's attempt to regulate coinage in its South American colony.
